The growth of an embryo during the early stages of pregnancy is linked to its risk of miscarriage, says a University of Nottingham study.

Scientists found that 78% of single-baby pregnancies which ended in miscarriage were in the smallest 5% of embryos.

Researchers measured the length of more than 500 single and twin embryos during the first trimester.

That was the suggestion last week after a study by the University of Pisa, Italy, found that DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is as effective as Hormone Replacement Therapy at managing menopausal symptoms, including hot flushes — while also increasing women’s enjoyment of sex.

HRT’s reputation has been tarnished in recent years by fears over its safety and fears that it raises the risk of heart attack, stroke and breast cancer.

But many doctors believe it would be misguided to consider DHEA as an effective alternative.

Scientists have developed a ‘fertility wand’ that has been shown to double the chances of becoming pregnant.

The pregnancy rate among women undergoing IVF who had the new treatment was 32.7 per cent, compared to 13.7 per cent in comparison groups who did not have the therapy.
