Ministry Declares War on Mumps, Measles, Rubella Print E-mail

RIYADH: The Ministry of Health is launching a national campaign for immunization against measles, rubella and mumps on Saturday.

The ministry’s campaign is to be two-pronged — creating awareness and inoculating the targeted group of people.

Though the campaign begins Saturday as planned, a formal launch of the program will be held in the presence of Education Minister Prince Faisal bin Abdullah and Health Minister Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah at the Health Ministry headquarters in the capital on Sunday, ministry spokesman Dr. Khalid Al-Mirghalani said on Friday.

Al-Mirghalani explained that the ministry will launch a countrywide awareness campaign during the first week and the vaccination will begin on Sept. 25.

Dengue Fever Cases Increase in Jeddah Print E-mail

(Okaz photo)JEDDAH: Local medical sources in Jeddah have confirmed that there are more than 12 dengue fever cases being reported here every week, which shows infections are on the rise. Previous reports showed that cases had dropped to 10 and even eight a week.
 
Prince Mish’al Bin Majed Bin Abdul Aziz, Governor of Jeddah, has directed the Jeddah Mayoralty, the General Administration for Agricultural Affairs and Directorate of Health Affairs to work together to eradicate the disease.
 
The sources said dengue fever has been spreading in Jeddah due to environmental factors and urged health directorate officials to launch intensive awareness campaigns to enlighten the public about preventive measures.

Ten Cases of Malta Fever in Single Week Print E-mail

MADINA: Health Affairs in Madina has set up a committee to urgently tackle the appearance of ten cases of Malta fever across the region, half of them in the area of Al-Hinakiya.
 
Al-Watan Arabic daily reported that the cases, involving four men and six women, all Saudis working with cattle, were recorded in a single week beginning May 20 this year in Al-Hinakiya, Khaybar, Al-Eis, Mahd Al-Dhahab and Wadi Al-Fur’.

All Imported Veggies Being Monitored: SFDA Print E-mail

RIYADH: The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) announced Tuesday that although the risks from E. coli are minimal in the Kingdom, the organization is monitoring all vegetables that are imported into the Kingdom for infection.

Saudi Arabia has temporarily stopped importing vegetables from European countries to prevent entry of agricultural products contaminated by the E. coli bacterium.

Minister of Agriculture Fahd Balghunaim said the import ban comes into effect Wednesday, adding that it would continue until the source of the virus becomes clear.

An official from SFDA said that import of vegetables from Europe is minimal since only five-star hotels use such items in the Kingdom.

Need to Integrate HIV Carriers in Society Stressed Print E-mail

JEDDAH: Umm Yasir, 28, and Abu Yasir, 38, are just like any newlyweds, but with one difference: They are HIV positive.

Arab News was invited recently to meet the couple at the Saudi Charity Association for AIDS Patients (SCAAP).

Not surprisingly, they were guarded and expressed themselves cautiously. They avoided shaking hands. Umm Yasir, was energetic and would laugh at times, while Abu Yasir remained serious and reluctant to let us take his picture to avoid possible embarrassment.
