    Women who work night shifts are at higher risk of breast cancer, warn researchers.

    Their findings suggest working at night increases the chances of the disease by 40 per cent.

    Women working more than two night shifts a week have double the risk of those on day shifts, says a report from scientists, while night workers who also describe themselves as ‘morning people’ or ‘larks’ have a stronger risk than those who say they are ‘night owls’.

    Doctors have created a test that detects how strong a baby's immune system is at birth - and how likely they are to fall prey to colds in their first year.

    A team from Washington University School of Medicine developed a technique that identifies which babies have a diminished immune response to viruses from a sample of their umbilical cord blood.

    They found these babies were more likely to go on and suffer respiratory infections in their first year.

    A panel of US health experts has for the first time backed a drug to prevent HIV infection in healthy people.

    The panel recommended US regulators approve the daily pill, Truvada, for use by people considered at high risk of contracting the Aids virus.

    The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is not required to follow the panel's advice, but it usually does.

    Some health workers and groups active in the HIV community have opposed the approval of the drug.
