Doctor Sentenced to Death for Ordering Unnecessary Scan

Dr. Philip Bird, a family practitioner in Oxford, Mississippi, has been sentenced to death by lethal injection for ordering an MRI on a patient with uncomplicated low back pain. Bird's sentence is believed to be the first under the state's new "get tough" 3-strikes law. The presiding judge, the Honorable Marsha Williams, told the court that although she sympathized with the defendant, the law left her no discretion. Bird twice previously had been found guilty of ordering unnecessary scans: a CT for a woman reporting pregnancy-related tension headache and a bone scan for a patient with localized prostate cancer.

  • 'Wasta' and its Negative Impact on Medical Care

I have extensively dealt with the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center (KFSH&RC) in Jeddah and since I don't know anything about KFSH&RC in Riyadh, I will restrict what I am saying to the hospital's operations in Jeddah.

I will start by emphasizing that the hospital's director and staff are excused for they are shouldering unprecedented burdens and are facing circumstances for which they are not to blame for. They are helpless. If the situation in the hospital is dire, it is not the fault of staff as they are simply doing their jobs to the best of their abilities.

The people who should be blamed are certain influential individuals who force the hospital to treat patients who do not need to be treated there. This is the reason why the hospital is crowded with patients and the waiting list for check-ups and treatment is long. Often, patients have to wait so long that they give up hope and go to a private hospital.

  • Director of Hail General Hospital was 'Relieved'

    Added On : 28th August 2012

HAIL — The Directorate of Health Affairs in Hail has said the head of a public hospital in the city was relieved of his post on his request, refuting claims that he had resigned due to lack of cooperation from the authorities.

Dr. Abdul Aziz Al-Nekhailan, director of Hail General Hospital, announced his resignation before his staff during a post-Eid get-together Saturday, saying lack of cooperation from the Health Affairs Directorate had led to a series of medical errors at the hospital.

Al-Nekhailan said he had tendered his resignation after a medical malpractice complaint was lodged by the husband of a 26-year-old woman who was given the wrong type of blood resulting in a miscarriage.

  • Al-Nekhailan: I am Ready to Work as a Doctor Anywhere

    Added On : 29th August 2012

JEDDAH – Dr. AbdulAziz Al-Nekhailan, director of Hail General Hospital, told Okaz that he had not requested the administration at the hospital to relieve him of his post. Al-Nekhailan said that he was ready to serve as a doctor anywhere.

Al-Nekhailan also said that the bureaucratic procedures of the Directorate of Health Affairs had made it impossible for him to do his work and further develop the hospital, which is why he wanted to be relieved of his post.

In a phone call to an Okaz official, Al-Nekhailan said the directorate was fully aware of the hospital's problems and medical errors, yet it did nothing about it. He further talked about the false promises the directorate gave him – to release SR10 million approved by the Minister of Health to develop the hospital. Every time Al-Nekhailan called the directorate to inquire about the status of the fund, he received the same answer "it's still under study."
