Father Dies after Son Donates Two-thirds of Liver to Save Him

MADINAH – A man was described as giving the best examples of loyalty, kindness and obedience when he donated two-thirds of his liver tissue to his father who later died following the transplant operation in the US, a local newspaper reported on Thursday.

Naif Al-Nazawi bore the pain and the long duration of the operation, requiring follow-up surgery to remove some pus from the transplant. He had accompanied his father to the US for the latter's treatment with the hope that they would return home together.

After completion of the preliminary medical tests he insisted on donating parts of his liver to his father. He was adamant that anyone else should donate his liver to his father.

After completion of the preliminary procedures prior to the operation, Al-Nazawi and his father were ready to enter the operation theater to carry out the transplant.

The operation took 20 hours and was initially considered a success.

Al-Nazawi was happy that he would eventually see his father in good health and thanked Allah.

However, fate did not give Al-Nazawi a lot of time to be happy as his father suffered a heart attack 48 hours following the operation.

Al-Nazawi decided to leave his bed despite his need for rest following the operation.

He went to his father's room and prayed that he would recover so that they return to Madinah, but he died moments after the son saw him.

Al-Nazawi said from the US: "May Allah bestow His mercy on my father. He was a father, brother and friend to me.

"We thank Allah for what He has destined. I was determined that none should precede me in being kind and dutiful to my father.

"I stuck to my decision to transplant 65 percent of my liver to my father with the hope of seeing him healthy. This is the least I could do for my dear father. I presented to my father what was dearest to me.

"If he needed all that I possessed, I would have given it to him.

"It is Allah Almighty who has ordered us to be kind to our parents."

Al-Nazawi said he would never forget the last time he saw his father when he was still under the effects of the anesthesia.

"He looked at me and smiled. He was quietly supplicating and glorifying Allah.

"It was as if he was bidding me farewell and praying for me. I had hopes that we would return together, but he died. I thank Allah for granting me success to serve my father during his life and before his death."

Al-Nazawi's mother expressed grief following the death of her husband.

She said: "I went through a difficult moment when the doctors informed me about my husband's death a short while after he underwent a liver transplant.

"Now I'm alone in the room, as my husband has passed away.

"My son is on the white bed and I have a young son and daughter.

"I can see the pain and sorrow on their innocent faces.

"I have found myself facing a difficult choice, which is to either accompany my husband's body or remain beside my son, who has suffered pain and complications following the liver transplant.

"This was until my brother-in-law arrived and completed all the procedures and accompanied the body. Now I'm looking after my son, who is recovering thanks to Allah."
