The clinical lectures were followed by the hands on training on the different types of the ventilators e.g. Bipap, High Frequency Oscillation, conventional and advanced ventilators. Communication Skills for Doctors Workshop: --NUH, Singapore------22-24 Sep, 2003. Conducted under the auspices of the Institute of Medical Education & Training, National Healthcare Group College, Singapore. The different facets of communication problems between doctors and patients, doctor and doctor were discussed and their possible remedies were worked out with examples and practical experiences. The aim of the workshop was to improve the communication gap between all those involved in the care of the patients. National level Facilitator & Clinical Instructor for UNICEF’s IMCI program: Jan 00- 2002. The IMCI (Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses) is a new initiative by WHO and UNICEF to decease the morbidity and mortality in children less than 5 years. It comprises 11-day case management workshop where participants are taught the practical clinical skills in managing the problems at resource-restrained areas. I have facilitated one National and 2 District level IMCI courses. Training of Provincial Master Trainers for Essential Newborn Care:--Facilitator—June 2003. Conducted under the auspices of the “Save the Children” (US) and organized jointly by the Women Health Project, Ministry of Health, Pakistan and Saving the Newborn Lives (SNL) Initiative, this 10 day workshop was aimed at increasing the awareness and better practical care approach for the newborns in the resource poor areas. The key pediatricians and doctors from the far flung areas were trained to spread the messages in the local community. Coordinator Essential Maternal & Newborn Care advance workshops: This was a series of 18 workshops, each of 1 week, 14 of which were held at Nishtar Medical College & Hospital Multan while 4 were held at Children Hospital Complex, Multan. It was designed to disseminate the knowledge and attitude of better mother and child care among the doctors, nurses, postgraduate residents, nurses and lady health visitors. This is sponsored by “Save the Children” (US). Each workshop comprises of topics such as: Maternal factors leading to dangerous pregnancy. Fetal conditions leading to bad outcome of pregnancy. Immediate newborn care & resuscitation Postnatal care up to 6 weeks Dealing with low birth weight babies Breast feeding Recognition of danger sings in newborns Communication skills A total of 270 health care providers were trained at these workshops. ARI-Standard Case Management Course: The 4-day workshop was held at Nishtar Hospital, Multan in December 1995 under the auspices of WHO and the National steering committee. It focused on the practical training of the skills to manage children with acute respiratory infections in a standard way. The purpose of the program was to decrease morbidity and to cut down the case fatality rate of the pneumonias. Breast Feeding Management Course: The 3-day workshop was held at Nishtar Hospital, Multan in 1996 under the auspices of WHO and the Provincial Breast Feeding steering committee. It focused on the normal lactation and the ways by which breast-feeding could be promoted. The difficulties encountered in breast-feeding and their solutions were also highlighted. The practical demonstrations to help mothers to feed their newborns were also part of this workshop. Basic Biostatistics Workshop for Clinicians--------NUH, Singapore---------26 July, 2003 Conducted under the auspices of the Pediatric department, National University Hospital, Singapore. The basic concepts with reference to the pediatric research were emphasized. The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is well equipped with all types of invasive and non invasive ventilators, centrally monitored beds, two isolation rooms, one each positive and negative pressure rooms. It focused at the cause of acute flaccid paralysis with special reference to the Poliomyelitis. The findings were very alarming that 66% of the confirmed polio cases had taken their oral polio vaccines. An ongoing longitudinal study of school children whereby the anthropometric parameters & medical checkup is performed thrice a year. 6. IMMAN: Initiative for Mother Milk Awareness in Newborns. A new approach where pregnant mothers are counseled, instead of training doctors/nurses, before delivery to motivate them to breastfeed their babies. 7. PASS: Program for Asthma Screening in Schools. The school children are being screened with Spirometry and more than 5000 have been screened by now. 8. I- CATCH Program: Improving Child health through Maternal Education. In collaboration with American Academy of Pediatrics, this program aims at maternal motivation leading to change in behavior for better child health. 9. Weekly Follow Up Clinics: Supervising these clinics for smooth and organized care of the children. Asthma Tuberculosis Community & Social service: Working under the banner of Helping Hands Foundation, we try to: Provide free/ partially free medical facilities to the deserving Children Arrange free camps at rural areas Falah News Letter: sent bimonthly to stake holders of health for promotion of healthier living in children Disseminating health education in the community through Lady health workers. Akhuwat: Interest free microfinance for poor but skillful people. Have financed to more than 1000 people with more than 10 Million rupees.
