• Egyptian Dies of H1N1 Flu After Umrah

    CAIRO – An Egyptian woman has died of the new H1N1 flu virus after falling ill while on Umrah pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia, an Egyptian health ministry official said Sunday.
     
    The official said the woman, who suffered from a pre-existing heart ailment due to rheumatic fever, had traveled to Saudi Arabia for the minor pilgrimage in early July, and developed flu symptoms on July 11.

  • Anti-depressants 'May Do More Harm than Good'

    Common anti-depressants could be doing patients more harm than good, according to researchers examined the impact of the medications on the whole body.

    A team from McMaster University examined previous patient studies into the effects of anti-depressants and determined that the benefits of most anti-depressants compare poorly to the risks, which include premature death in elderly patients.

    'We need to be much more cautious about the widespread use of these drugs,' said study leader and evolutionary biologist Paul Andrews.

  • Kidney Cancers: Major Rise 'Linked to Obesity'

    Obesity is fuelling a major increase in the number of cases of kidney cancers diagnosed in Britain, experts say.

    Cancer Research UK has published figures showing there were just over 9,000 cases in 2009, compared with just under 2,300 in 1975.

    Obesity increases kidney cancer risk by about 70%, compared with smoking which increases it by about 50%.

    Cancer Research UK says too few people understand the cancer risk of being overweight.
