(UCLA)It has long been suspected that obese people age faster, but to date there has been no conclusive proof. However, US and German scientists have now been able to prove that obesity considerably accelerates the ageing process of the liver. The study was published in "PNAS".

    Scientists from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the University Hospital Dresden used an epigenetic clock that they had developed. With the help of DNA methylation, they determined the age of different human organs, tissue and cell types. In total, 1,200 tissue samples were analysed, including 140 from the liver. They compared the biological age with the chronological age. In lean persons, the ages matched.

    Two newly-approved drugs can slow the progression of a deadly lung disease, but there are concerns about the drugs' high prices.

    Roche's Esbriet and Boehringer Ingelheim's Ofev were approved Wednesday by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for treatment of people with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, The New York Times reported.

    The drugs don't cure the disease -- a scarring of the lungs -- but slow lung function decline in some patients. About 100,000 Americans have idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and many die within three to five years of diagnosis.
