RIYADH A medical team in a private hospital here almost caused a medical disaster by basing their diagnosis on a faulty thermometer.
A three-year-old was brought in for examination, and the thermometer showed 39 degrees Celsius, prompting the medical team to treat the fever. Despite all measures, the temperature remained constant at 39 degrees. They even sponged him with cold water and placed him on ice to no avail. The worried father seeing the flurried activity expressed his suspicion whether the thermometer was in order, and asked his temperature be taken. He was surprised to see the mercury stop at 39 degrees, thus averting a disaster.
