Death After Toothache Investigated

BAISH: A man in his thirties went to a health care center in Baish, complaining of a toothache and was dead within an hour, local daily Al-Madinah reported Sunday.

The Health Affairs department in Jazan has opened an investigation into the cause of death. Acting spokesman of the department Hussain Maashi said the passports of the members of the medical and technical team which dealt with the case had been confiscated.

Ali Aman Al-Bishi, father of the dead man, recalled that his son, Aman, died after he had written letters to the director of Baish general hospital and the director of the health affairs department in Jazan, asking them to help his son. "Destiny was faster. My son died an hour later," he said.

The father said last Tuesday his son felt pain in one of his teeth, so he took his mother and went to the health care center in Baish. "He was referred to the dental section. He went there on foot around 3 p.m. The doctor prescribed an injection, which a nurse administered him. He immediately went into a coma and his heart stopped," the father said.

He added that the emergency doctor was summoned and he and the other doctors gave his son several electric shocks to which the heart responded. His son began to breathe again but was still in a critical condition. "My son was then referred to King Fahd Central Hospital in Jazan where he was admitted to the intensive care unit," Al-Bishi said.

The father recalled that before his son was referred to the general hospital, two of the dentists dealing with his toothache had entered into a heated discussion. One dentist accused the other of working without a conscience. "Next day I received a call from the hospital that my son had died," he said tearfully.

Aman's mother, Ghabyah Mabroul Hussain Al-Mufreh, urged officials concerned to investigate the unexpected death of her son. "Those who deprived Aman from seeing his unborn son should be held responsible," she said.

Aman got married about 18 months ago and his widowed wife is pregnant. "My son has never had any illness. You can ask all his neighbors and friends," she said.
