KFSHRC TO PRESENT 17 CANCER RESEARCH PAPERS

RIYADH – Seventeen cancer research papers prepared by a medical team at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center (KFSHRC) here have been accepted for presentation and discussion at the annual meeting of the US Organization for Cancer Research to be held in Denver, Colorado from April 18-22, 2009, Al-Madina Arabic daily reported on Wednesday.
Dr. Qassem Al-Qassabi, the hospital’s executive supervisor general, pointed out that the acceptance of such a large number of medical research papers reflects the high level of scientific output as well as the highly qualified scientists of the hospital and the research center.
The research has been the product of a scientific team headed by Dr. Khawla Al-Kurayie, the hospital’s senior cancer research scientist, who said that this is the first time that the US Organization for Cancer Research has accepted such a large number of research papers from outside the United States.
Dr. Al-Kurayie said that the research to be presented at the conference covers many of the most common cancers in the Kingdom such as cancers of the thyroid and lymph glands and colon cancer in addition to ovarian cancer, noting that the hospital’s research includes the discovery of a number of genes that cause those cancers in Saudi patients and the use of modern techniques and complex compounds which have proven successful in fighting such cancers in the laboratory.
