One more death, 4 new MERS cases

JEDDAH – The Ministry of Health announced one more death from the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus in the Kingdom on Saturday.


Four new cases were also reported in the past 24 hours, said the ministry website.

A 40-year-old woman succumbed to the virus in Riyadh.

An 80-year-old woman is in the ICU in a Riyadh hospital, a 48-year-old man suffering from diabetes has been admitted to a government hospital in Madinah. 

Two cases: A 25-year-old and a 28-year-old youths have been isolated at their homes in Qunfuda.

A 33-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man, who recovered from the disease, were discharged from a government hospital in Jeddah.

The Philippines said on Thursday that two of its citizens working in Saudi Arabia died from the MERS coronavirus.

Foreign Department spokesman Charles Jose said their relatives have been informed and efforts were being made to bring the bodies home.  “Our consul general in Jeddah confirmed that there were two Filipinos who died of MERS,” he told AFP. “The consulate is helping to repatriate their remains,” he said, adding that the deaths were recorded on May 12 and 18.

The identities of the two, as well as other details, were not revealed to protect their relatives’ privacy.
