Energy drinks ‘cause tooth decayÂ’JUBAIL — Oral and dental health specialist Fatima Muhammad Shiryawi has warned that consuming energy drinks causes tooth decay due to the high acidic effects that corrode the enamel and ultimately destroy teeth.

Shiryawi, who works in a private sector hospital in Jubail, told Al-Sharq daily, “Energy drinks have a large content of acids that cause a loss of minerals that form the enamel and change its composition.

According to their nature, teeth are existent in an alkaline medium and energy drinks that have high acidic characteristics affect the enamel. They lead to wearing away of the dental layer and the appearance of sensitive teeth.”

She further said: “When taking such drinks, after just 20 minutes the harms begin and the teeth begin to lose minerals. With increased consumption and repetition, the harm to teeth increases. Usually, sensitive teeth appear in the forefront of symptoms for acidic corrosion of teeth. There is pain that accompanies eating or drinking hot or cold foods or drinks.”

Acidic corrosion affects the function and shape of teeth. The enamel surface becomes weaker and the color of the teeth changes to yellow and the dentine layer below begins to appear. It is expected that grooves will appear in the teeth in the places that are prone to acids. This necessitates a visit to the dentist.

Shiryawi said consuming energy drinks should be avoided as much as possible. And when consuming them, a straw should be used. Afterwards, a person should drink large quantities of water so as to reduce the effect of acids on the teeth.

The Saudi council of ministers has banned the advertising and promotion of energy drinks.
