The decision was taken after consulting several specialists at private hospitals, said Ibrahim Al-Yehiya, director general of the Red Crescent’s emergency medical services administration, according to a recent report in a local publication.

"We came to the conclusion that it would be appropriate to cancel the project.” Al-Yehiya said most undergraduates are trained to deliver babies in fully equipped hospitals. “This is why we scrapped the project.”

The Red Crescent delivered 741 babies at homes last year. There were 283 in Makkah, 179 in Riyadh, 66 in the Eastern Province, and 44 in Madinah.

According to official statistics, 216 women gave birth in Red Crescent ambulances last year. There were 78 in Makkah, 48 in Riyadh, 22 in Asir, and 21 in Madinah.
