DAMMAM: Cheap and out of date cosmetics are causing serious health problems in the Kingdom, including skin diseases, hair loss and cancer, local doctors say.
These products are often manufactured incorrectly or contain harmful fats, the doctors were quoted as saying in a local publication recently.
Shoaa’ Al-Dhailan, a beauty expert and head of a female workshop in the Eastern Province, said cheap cosmetics are a major problem. “We educate our clients about health issues related to the use of cosmetics. There is cooperation with the Eastern Province municipality in this regard,” she said.
Beauty expert Naji Majdlawi warned that these old and poor quality cosmetics can cause hair loss by damaging roots, which would need treatment by specialist doctors. They can also cause skin problems such as psoriasis and vitiligo.
Dermatologist Ali Abdulrahman said there has been an increase in skin diseases in the Kingdom this decade, caused largely by cosmetics with a high concentration of chemicals.
The Saudi Food and Drug Authority monitors, tests and issues warning about unsafe cosmetics and other products.
