    Radiation from mobile phones may affect the brain development of unborn babies, the lead author of a controversial animal study has claimed.

    Pregnant mice placed in the vicinity of an active mobile phone gave birth to offspring which showed signs of hyperactivity, anxiety and poor memory.

    Infant mice whose mothers were not exposed to the radiation were not affected the same way.

    They are the main cause of world blindness with over half of those aged 65 and over affected by cataract developments in one or both eyes.

    But now scientists have created a revolutionary drug that could prevent the clouding that gradually develops over the lens.

    Revealed by a team at Adelaide University in Australia this is the first time a non-surgical cure for the debilitating condition has been discovered.

    Currently there are no drops or medications to prevent or reverse cataracts.

    The only treatment is to have the cloudy lens surgically removed and replaced with a synthetic lens.

    Hundreds of thousands of babies' lives could be saved each year if pregnant women were screened for syphilis, researchers say.

    Syphilis causes 500,000 stillbirths and newborn deaths globally, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa.

    A study of 41,000 women, published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, showed that testing and antibiotics could more than halve the number of deaths.

    UK experts said screening was cheap and cost-effective.
