• Malaria Hope: Bacteria that Make Mosquitoes Resistant

    MosquitoResearchers have found a strain of bacteria that can infect mosquitoes and make them resistant to the malaria parasite.

    The study, in the journal Science, showed the parasite struggled to survive in infected mosquitoes.

    Malaria is spread between people by the insects so it is hoped that giving mosquitoes malaria immunity could reduce human cases.

    Experts said this was a first, distant prospect for malaria control.

    Malaria is a major global disease. The World Health Organisation estimates that 220 million people are infected annually and 660,000 die.

    The virus has killed seven people in Al-Ahsa, with a further six people reportedly infected over the last two weeks. The situation has caused panic among health workers, visitors and patients in the region.

    This brings to six the number of deaths in the eastern town due to the new respiratory virus in the last few days.

    On Thursday, the health ministry said in a statement that five people have died and two other patients were in critical condition. It later added that three more cases were discovered, including one in intensive care.

    JEDDAH — Dr. Ahmad Abu Khatwah, environmental adviser at Jeddah Mayoralty, said dengue fever cases in Jeddah have reached 150 cases a week.

    He said the rate is alarming as it is the highest since 2006 when there were an average of 70 cases a week. The total number of recorded dengue fever cases so far this year reached 1,300 cases, and field teams from the municipality on a daily basis disinfects about 600 new sites where mosquitoes breed.
